Scatness is a small community located on the Scat Ness headland. This area is at the very southern tip of Mainland, which is the largest island in Shetland, Scotland. Scatness is quite close to Sumburgh Airport, which is the main airport for the Shetland Islands. It's also just across the water from Sumburgh Head, a famous landmark.

Discovering Scatness
Scatness is a quiet place with a few housing areas, like Sanblister Place and Colonial Place. On the eastern side of the Scat Ness headland, you can find two beaches called Outer and Inner Tumble Wick. These beaches were once busy places where people would go fishing.
Ancient History of Scatness
Scatness is special because it has some amazing ancient sites.
Ness of Burgi Fort
At the southeastern tip of Scatness, you can find the Ness of Burgi fort. This is an Iron Age "blockhouse," which is a type of small, strong fort. It was likely built around the same time as the famous brochs found in Shetland. Brochs are tall, round stone towers. The Ness of Burgi fort is now looked after by Historic Scotland, an organization that protects important historical places.
Old Scatness Settlements
Another exciting part of Scatness is the site of the broch, wheelhouse, and other settlements. These ancient homes and structures were dug up by archaeologists in the early 2000s. They show us how people lived in Scatness during the Iron Age and even after.
