Scelodonta (also known as Heteraspis) is a group of tiny insects called leaf beetles. These beetles belong to a larger family known as Eumolpinae. There are more than 70 different kinds, or species, of Scelodonta beetles.

You can find most of these beetles in warm parts of the world. They live in places like Africa (the Afrotropical realm), Europe and Asia (the Palearctic realm), and parts of Asia (the Oriental realm). Only a few types, about three species, are found in Australia.

Scientists sometimes change the names of animals. For a long time, this group of beetles was called Scelodonta. But now, many scientists believe the correct name should be Heteraspis. This is because the name Heteraspis was given to the beetles first.

What are Leaf Beetles?

Leaf beetles are a large family of insects. They are known for eating plants, especially leaves. Most leaf beetles are quite small. They often have bright, shiny colors.

These beetles are found all over the world. They play an important role in nature. Some leaf beetles can be pests to crops. Others help control weeds by eating them.

Where Scelodonta Beetles Live

Scelodonta beetles are found in several major biogeographic realms. These are large areas of the Earth with similar plants and animals.

African Homes

Many Scelodonta species live in the Afrotropical realm. This area includes most of Africa south of the Sahara Desert. It is a very diverse region with many different habitats.

Asian and European Habitats

Other species are found in the Palearctic realm. This huge area covers Europe, North Africa, and most of Asia. It includes many different climates, from cold to warm.

The Oriental realm is another home for these beetles. This region includes parts of South Asia and Southeast Asia. It is known for its tropical and subtropical environments.

Australian Species

Only a small number of Scelodonta species live in Australia. This shows how different animal groups can be found in specific parts of the world.

Types of Scelodonta Beetles

There are many different species within the Scelodonta group. Each species has its own unique features. Scientists give each one a special name.

For example, some species include:

  • Scelodonta aeneola
  • Scelodonta albidovittata
  • Scelodonta curculionoides
  • Scelodonta dillwyni
  • Scelodonta lewisii

Scientists are always studying these beetles. They learn more about where they live and what they eat. This helps us understand the natural world better.
