Schenevus is a small community in Otsego County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet, which is a small settlement, and also a census-designated place (CDP). A CDP is an area that the U.S. Census Bureau defines for gathering population data.
In 2010, the population of Schenevus was 551 people. The local school district, Schenevus Central School, serves students from several nearby towns. These towns include Maryland, Westford, Milford, Decatur, and Roseboom.
A special landmark in Schenevus is the Schenevus Carousel. This carousel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historical site in the United States.
Location and Roads
Schenevus is located in the southeastern part of Otsego County. A main road, New York State Route 7, goes right through the middle of the community.
Another major highway, Interstate 88, passes just south of Schenevus. You can reach the community from Interstate 88 by taking exit 18. These roads help connect Schenevus to other places.
History of Schenevus
Schenevus was first settled in the year 1793. For many years, it was an official village. It became an incorporated village on June 6, 1870. This meant it had its own local government.
However, Schenevus stopped being an incorporated village on December 31, 1994. After this date, it became a hamlet again.
