Maryland is a town located in Otsego County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 1,897 people lived there. The town was named after the U.S. state of the same name. The Town of Maryland is found on the southern border of Otsego County. It is northeast of the City of Oneonta.

History of Maryland Town

The area that is now the Town of Maryland was first settled around 1790. This happened in the southwest part of the town. Maryland officially became a town in 1808. It was formed from a part of the Town of Worcester.

During World War I, a special railway line was built through Maryland. This line helped larger freight trains move more easily.

Geography and Landscape

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town covers a total area of about 51.9 square miles (134.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.

Interstate 88 and New York State Route 7 both follow the path of the Schenevus Creek, running from east to west. South Hill is an elevated area that is partly located in the southeastern section of the town. The southern border of the town is also the border of Delaware County.

  • Dog Hill – An elevated area located northeast of Maryland.
  • Elk Creek – A small community located on County Road 34 and Schenevus Creek, near the northern town line.
  • Elk Creek – This is also the name of a stream that flows south into Schenevus Creek.
  • Hooker Mountain – Another elevated area near the northern town line.
  • Maryland – This is the main hamlet (small village) of Maryland. It is located on NY-7. It used to have its own firehouse, stores, and a train station. It still has a post office today.
  • Potato Creek Dip – An area west of the hamlet of Maryland on NY-7. It was known for challenging driving conditions.
  • Schenevus – A hamlet located north of NY-7 on County Road 34 and Elk Creek.
  • South Hill – A mountain range that is partly located in the southern part of the town.
