Worcester is a town located in Otsego County, New York, in the United States. About 2,220 people lived here in 2010. It's found on the southeastern edge of Otsego County, northeast of the city of Oneonta. The local school district, Worcester Central School, teaches around 369 students from kindergarten to 12th grade.

History of Worcester

People first started settling near Schenevus Creek around 1788. The town of Worcester was officially created in 1797. It was formed from a part of the town of Cherry Valley. Later, in 1808, other towns like Decatur, Maryland, and Westford were created from parts of Worcester.

Worcester covers about 46.9 square miles (121.4 square kilometers) in total. Most of this area, about 46.7 square miles (120.98 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.2 square miles (0.42 square kilometers), is water.

Interstate 88 runs through the middle of the town. It follows the same path as New York State Route 7. Both highways follow Schenevus Creek as it flows through Worcester. The southern border of the town touches Delaware and Schoharie counties. The highest point in Otsego County is located near the eastern edge of Worcester, just east of East Worcester.

The East Worcester Fish and Game Club is in the East Worcester-Decatur area. Locals often call it "The Lake." This spot is home to many different kinds of fish that live in the area, making it a popular place for fishing. The club also hosts fun events like fishing competitions, cookouts, clam bakes, and dances.

  • Lutheranville Hill – This is the highest point in Otsego County. It's east of East Worcester, between Brooker Hollow Road and the county line.
  • Pine Hill – A high point located northeast of South Worcester.
  • Pine Mountain – Another high point in the northeastern corner of Worcester.
  • South Hill – A high point in the west-central part of Worcester.
  • South Worcester – A community at the southern town line, on County Route 39 and Charlotte Creek. The historic area here, called the South Worcester Historic District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
  • Strain Mountain – A high point in the southern part of the town, northeast of South Worcester.
  • Stone Quarry Hill – A high point located northwest of East Worcester.
  • Tuscan – A location west of the main Worcester community.
  • Worcester – This is the main community or hamlet in the town. It's located on NY-7 and Schenevus Creek in the western part of the town. The Worcester Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
  • Snob's Knob – A section of town that is known for being wealthy.
