The Schofield Building is a tall building in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. It used to be called the Euclid Ninth Tower. This 14-story building stands about 172 feet (52 meters) high. You can find it at the corner of East 9th Street and Euclid Avenue. It's right next to the Rose Building and the City Club Building. The Schofield Building was built in 1902 as an office building. Today, its lower seven floors are home to the Kimpton Schofield Hotel. The top seven floors have apartments called the Schofield Residences.
A Look Back: The Building's History
The Schofield Building was built by the Calabrese family, who are from Cleveland. It was first used as an office building. A famous Cleveland architect named Levi Scofield designed it. He also designed the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Public Square.
In the 1960s, the building got a new look. Its outside was covered with steel. This made it look more "modern." It hid the fancy, decorated parts made of terracotta that were there before.
The Schofield Building then went through a big change. It took five years to restore and update it. This project turned the building into a hotel and apartment complex. It officially opened its doors in March 2016.
Bringing the Schofield Building Back to Life
A Cleveland family company, CRM (Calabrese, Racek, & Markos), worked with Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants Group. They led a huge project that cost $50 million. Their goal was to bring the building's outside back to its original look from the early 1900s.
Now, the Schofield Building has a new setup.
- The first seven floors have 122 hotel rooms and six special suites.
- The upper seven floors have 52 apartments of different sizes.
The restoration of the Schofield Building is one of many projects in Cleveland. Since the mid-1980s, many old buildings have been fixed up. Other famous places that have been restored include:
