How Was Schoonmaker Point Made?

This land wasn't always here! It was created using "dredge spoils." These are materials like sand and mud. They were dug up from the bottom of Richardson Bay. This happened during World War II. At that time, many ships were being built nearby.

Schoonmaker Point is a popular place for activities. You can easily launch kayaks from here. It's a perfect starting point to explore San Francisco Bay. There's also the Schoonmaker Point Marina. It's a busy place where boats are kept. You can also enjoy a 2.3-acre (9,300 m2) sand beach. From the point, you get amazing views. You can see Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco downtown skyline.

Right next to Schoonmaker Point is the United States Army Corps of Engineers Bay Model. This is a giant scale model of the entire San Francisco Bay. It can even show how the water moves in the bay!

Early Days: 1952

In 1952, Schoonmaker Point was smaller. The area around it was not very developed. The Schoonmaker Point Marina did not exist yet. Also, a building called the Bounty Building wasn't there. There were a few small buildings nearby.

Growing Bigger: 1965

By 1965, Schoonmaker Point had grown a lot. It was extended to its current size. The Schoonmaker Point Marina had also started operating. Another nearby boat harbor, Clipper Yacht Harbor, also added more piers.
