Schumer Springs is a small, unincorporated community in Perry County, Missouri, United States. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that is not officially a town or city with its own local government. It is located in the southern part of Cinque Hommes Township. The community is known for a special natural spring.

A Special Spring and Its History

Schumer Springs is built near a natural mineral spring. A mineral spring is a place where water flows out of the ground and contains special minerals. The community was likely named after this spring. It might also be named after people who lived nearby, like Henry J. Schumer, a farmer, and Frank P. Schuemer, a miller. They lived in the area around 1873.

The Unique Ebb-and-Flow Spring

The spring at Schumer Springs is very rare. It is called an ebb-and-flow spring. This means its water flow changes in a regular pattern, almost like a heartbeat. The amount of water coming out changes on its own, no matter how much rain has fallen.

Experts from the Missouri Geological Survey studied the spring from 1963 to 1965. They found that the spring's flow could be anywhere from 6,000 gallons to 258,000 gallons per day! That's a huge difference in water output.

Plans for a Resort Town

In 1905, six men from Jackson, Missouri had a big idea. They started a company to build a mineral bath spa at Schumer Springs. They hoped it would become a famous resort, just like Hot Springs, Arkansas. They bought 147 acres of land and hired an engineer to plan out the lots for buildings.

However, the resort faced money problems soon after it opened. Even though many people stayed at the hotel, it was losing money. By the time of the Great Depression, a difficult economic period, much of the town had to close down. A post office was opened in Schumer Springs in 1908.
