What People Do for a Living

The main ways people earn money in Schwarzenberg are through crafts, tourism, and farming. There are about a dozen larger businesses and around 100 smaller ones.

Tourism and Fun Activities

Every year, about 50,000 visitors stay overnight in Schwarzenberg. More than half of these visits happen during the summer. The village offers many ways to enjoy nature. You can find the Schwarzenberg-Bödele ski area, cross-country ski trails, and about 40 kilometers of paths for hiking in both winter and summer. Even big international ski races, like the Women’s World Cup downhill competitions, have been held here!

Farming and Animals

Raising livestock, like cows, is very important in Schwarzenberg. A group for farmers who raise animals was started way back in 1894. Today, there are about 45 farms with a total of 700 cows. Farmers also keep sheep and goats.

A special tradition called Alpine Transhumance is still very strong here. This means that about 650 cows are moved to higher mountain pastures in the spring and summer. Then, they are brought back down to the lower areas in the autumn and winter. This helps keep the mountain meadows healthy and provides good food for the animals.

Famous People from Schwarzenberg

  • A very famous artist named Angelica Kauffman (1741-1807) grew up in Schwarzenberg. She was known for her beautiful paintings.
