Schwerte is a city located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Around 48,000 people call Schwerte home. This city is found in the beautiful Ruhr valley, just north of the Sauerland mountain region.
The Ruhr River flows right through the middle of Schwerte. Because of its scenic views and trails, Schwerte is a very popular place for cycling and tourism.
History of Schwerte
Schwerte gained its important civic rights in the 12th century. This meant it could govern itself more independently.
The city was also a member of the medieval Hanseatic League. This was a powerful group of trading cities in Northern Europe. Being part of the Hanseatic League helped Schwerte become an important center for trade long ago.
