The History of Scipio
Scipio got its name from a nearby stream called Scipio Creek. The creek itself was named after a famous Roman general from ancient times, Scipio Africanus.
When Scipio was first settled, it was part of a different area. It was located in Tobucksy County, which was part of the Choctaw Nation. The Choctaw Nation was a large area of land belonging to the Choctaw people.
A post office opened in Scipio on January 24, 1890. At that time, the area was known as Indian Territory. This was before Oklahoma became a state.
