The Story
A Look Back
The movie begins with a flashback. A young Vincent Van Ghoul and his friend Mortifer are hunting ghosts. They manage to trap the last ghost inside the Chest of Demons. But then, other small ghosts attack Mortifer. Vincent has to escape, leaving Mortifer behind.
During the opening credits, Vincent tells us what happened in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo. In that show, Scooby accidentally let all the ghosts out. But with help from Daphne and Shaggy, they caught all but one of them.
Mystery Inc. Retires?
In the present day, the Mystery Inc. gang is at Old Timey Toys. They just caught Farmer Morgan, who was scaring teenagers. But the sheriff is not happy. He tells them they could be arrested for "criminal negligence." Because of this, the gang decides to stop solving mysteries for a while. Even Mrs. Malvo, the toy store owner, gets handcuffed outside!
The next day, they have a garage sale. They sell many items from their past mysteries. Fred is very sad because they even sell the Mystery Machine. Then, they find a crystal ball. This is the same one Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby used to talk to Van Ghoul before.
A New Adventure Begins
Suddenly, Van Ghoul contacts them through the crystal ball. He tells them about the last ghost. Daphne explains everything to Fred and Velma, who are a bit doubtful. Daphne then shows them a red van she calls the Misstery Machine. The gang starts their journey to meet Van Ghoul.
On their way to Van Ghoul's house, a phantom car chases them. Daphne drives very well and gets away from it. Fred feels a bit lost because Daphne is taking charge. He thinks he doesn't have a role anymore.
The Thirteenth Ghost
The gang finally meets Van Ghoul. But they are all attacked by the thirteenth ghost! It's a huge, winged demon-like creature named Asmodeus. Shaggy tells them he sent the Chest of Demons to Van Ghoul's home in the Himalayas. So, the gang travels there in a flying boat.
When they arrive, they see Bernie Alan. He was the one who asked about the crystal ball at their garage sale. Daphne, Van Ghoul, Scooby, and Shaggy follow him. But the phantom car attacks them again. It makes a loud noise that causes an avalanche. Van Ghoul finds he can't use his magic. The four crash into a temple.
Meanwhile, Fred and Velma search an old post office. They meet an adult Flim-Flam. He tries to sell them things like Chest of Demons toys and ghost-catching gear. Fred and Velma leave. But something grabs them that even Velma can't explain. She realizes that real ghosts must be involved.
Facing Asmodeus
Asmodeus was waiting for Van Ghoul. He chases the four when they find the chest. Van Ghoul breaks his crystal ball. This somehow sends the kids outside the temple. There, they meet Velma and Fred. Fred cheers up his sad team. Daphne, feeling better, comes up with a plan.
Velma goes to Flim-Flam's store and takes everything. She, Fred, and Flim-Flam are chased by the phantom car again. But they escape because of the Misstery Machine's new upgrades. Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby go into the castle to help Van Ghoul. They meet up with Flim-Flam, Velma, and Fred.
They find Van Ghoul defeated. He says that Asmodeus is actually the demon form of his powerful ancestor, Asomad Van Ghoul. He blames himself for the danger. Asmodeus opens the Chest of Demons. Velma points out that this is impossible because only a living person can open the Chest.
The Truth Revealed
Asmodeus tries to run away. But Daphne stops him. It turns out Asmodeus is actually Mortifer! Mortifer wanted to sell the Chest to Bernie Alan for a lot of money. But Alan reveals he is an international agent and arrests Mortifer. Mortifer tries to escape in the phantom car, but he is caught again.
A vision of the real Asmodeus and Asomad appears briefly. Velma figures out from an old book that the real Asmodeus was actually watching over Van Ghoul. She says he found peace. However, Velma made up this story to help Van Ghoul feel better. She also says the first twelve ghosts were just illusions because of the thin air in the Himalayas. Velma then teases opening the real Chest of Demons. But when she sees the gang's scared faces, she decides not to. The gang decides to keep solving mysteries together.
