Plot Summary
The story begins when Shaggy finds out his uncle, Colonel Beauregard, has passed away. His uncle left him a big country estate, which is like a large farm with a mansion, in the Southern United States.
Before Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy can get to the estate, they meet Sheriff Rufus Buzby. The sheriff warns them that the place is haunted and they should leave. But then, the sheriff gets a call about an escaped circus ape. He leaves, and the gang continues their journey.
When they arrive, they are chased by spooky characters. These include a headless horseman, a ghost wolf, and even the ghost of the Colonel himself! The Colonel's ghost tells them to leave or face trouble.
They also meet a strange helper named Farquard. He tells them that a huge treasure of jewels is hidden on the estate. Farquard believes the jewels belong to him, not Shaggy. Shaggy wants to leave, but his truck gets stuck in quicksand. This forces them to stay the night.
Since ghosts are everywhere, Scrappy gets an idea. He calls a group of ghost hunters called The Boo Brothers. To their surprise, the Boo Brothers are ghosts themselves! They try to catch the other ghosts, but they aren't very good at it.
Things get even more complicated when Shaggy meets Sadie Mae Scroggins. Her older brother, Billy Bob Scroggins, carries a shotgun. Their family has an old fight with the Colonel's family. Sadie Mae falls for Shaggy, but Billy Bob wants to shoot him!
The Treasure Hunt Begins
Later, Shaggy, Scooby, and Scrappy go to the kitchen for food. There, they find a diamond with a clue! This clue proves that the hidden fortune is real. Excited, the gang decides to go on a treasure hunt. Farquard is not happy about this. Sheriff Buzby, who is still looking for the escaped ape, doesn't believe the jewels exist.
They follow the clues left by the Colonel. These clues lead them all over the mansion and the estate. As they search, more ghosts appear. These include the Ghost of Colonel Beauregard, the Headless Horseman, and the Skull Ghost.
They also have to deal with Billy Bob and Sadie Mae Scroggins. And the escaped ape keeps showing up too! The Boo Brothers try to help, but they often cause more trouble than they solve.
Finding the Treasure
After a long hunt, they find the last clue. It says the treasure is hidden in the mansion's fireplace! The Skull Ghost is very happy about this. He holds the gang at gunpoint, trying to claim the treasure for himself.
When they catch the Skull Ghost, they find out it's actually the Sheriff! But then, the real Sheriff arrives. He reveals that the Skull Ghost is his greedy twin brother, T.J. Buzby. T.J. was pretending to be the Sheriff and was also behind the other ghosts haunting the place.
With the treasure found, Shaggy learns that the Boo Brothers need a home. So, he gives the mansion to them. The treasure is put into a special fund for orphans, called the Beauregard Trust Fund. Shaggy and the dogs say goodbye and drive home. On their way, they see the Colonel's ghost again. Shaggy thinks it's a prank by Scooby, but then realizes it's real and speeds away!
The Treasure Hunt Clues
Colonel Beauregard left a series of clues for Shaggy to find the treasure. Each clue leads to another part of the estate and a piece of the treasure.
- The first clue is in the freezer, inside an ice cube tray. It says to go outside and look for the part of the house with its "knee out." This leads them to the Chimney, where they find a Diamond.
- The next clue is found near a "broken key" and leads to the Piano, where another Diamond is found.
- They look for an "old relative" whose face can't look and hands can't hold. This points to the Grandfather Clock, where they find a Diamond.
- The clue about a clock with "no pendulum" leads them to the Attic, where they discover a Gold and diamond necklace.
- For the next clue, they are told to think of what they are called when they are "not the buyer." This takes them to the Cellar, where they find a Gold and diamond tiara.
- The next clue is "large and flat" and like a "stone you wear as a hat." This is the Colonel Beauregard's headstone in the cemetery, where they find a Jeweled brooch.
- The clue about not needing a horse if they "go buggy" leads them to the Barn, where they find a Ruby.
- To "get to the bottom of things" and think how they feel when "not sick" leads them to the Well, where they find a Pearl necklace.
- The next clue mentions "many more pearls" at the end of a tunnel with "many more perils." This is in the Basement, where another Pearl necklace is found.
- The clue says "no mystery" and the jewel is "in plain view" inside Bear Cave. This leads them to the Bear Cave, where they find a Pearl and ruby necklace.
- They are told to go to a place that "covers the tide" and to "pier" inside. This is the Boathouse, where they find a Jeweled crown.
- The final clue says "no more riddles" and that the treasure is in the Fireplace. Here, they find the Remaining treasure.
