Ronald Ralph Schell (born December 23, 1931, and passed away on June 12, 2026) was a talented American actor and a funny stand-up comedian. He was known for making people laugh with his quick wit and humorous performances. One of his most famous roles was playing Duke Slater in the popular 1960s TV show Gomer Pyle – USMC. Before becoming a TV star, Ronnie Schell started his comedy career in nightclubs in San Francisco, California. He even introduced the famous music group, the Kingston Trio, on one of their early albums.

Early Life and Service

Ronnie Schell was born in Richmond, California, on December 23, 1931. After finishing high school, he joined the United States Air Force. He served for four years and achieved the rank of airman first class. This experience was an important part of his early life.

A Career in Comedy and Acting

Becoming Duke Slater

Ronnie Schell became well-known for his role as Duke Slater in the TV show Gomer Pyle – USMC. Duke was the best friend of Gomer Pyle, a main character in the series. Ronnie played this role for three seasons. He then took a break to star in his own comedy show, Good Morning World. In this show, he played a disc jockey.

Ronnie made guest appearances on many other popular TV shows. These included The Andy Griffith Show, Happy Days, The Golden Girls, Saved by the Bell, and Jessie. His long list of TV roles showed his versatility as an actor.

"America's Slowest Rising Comedian"

Because his fame grew steadily over many years, Ronnie Schell was sometimes called "America's Slowest Rising Comedian." This was a playful title that highlighted his consistent and long-lasting career.

He also appeared in commercials for Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA). He was the voice of Peter Puck, a fun hockey puck character in cartoons shown during National Hockey League games in the 1970s. Later, in the 1980s, he was featured in many TV commercials for Shakey's Pizza.

Later Years in Entertainment

In 2007, Ronnie Schell joined a touring stage show called 5 Star Revue. He also performed in an off-Broadway show in 2009. This show was a mix of comedy and music. More recently, in 2019, he worked as a comedy advisor for actor Richard Dreyfuss on the Netflix movie The Last Laugh.
