Chronology

Followed by Galaxy Goof-Ups

Yogi's Space Race was a fun American animated TV show. It ran for 90 minutes and was shown on NBC from September 9, 1978, to December 2, 1978. The show was made up of four different parts, kind of like a parody of Star Wars:

  • Yogi's Space Race: This part featured Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Jabberjaw, and new characters. They all raced against each other across the galaxy.
  • Galaxy Goof-Ups: Here, Yogi Bear, Scare Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and Quack-Up were space police officers. They went on funny adventures.
  • The Buford Files: This segment was about Buford, a sleepy bloodhound. He helped two teenagers, Cindy Mae and Woody, solve mysteries in Fenokee County.
  • The Galloping Ghost: This part followed Nugget Nose, a ghost miner. He looked after Wendy and Rita at the Fuddy Dude Ranch.

Later, Galaxy Goof-Ups got its own 30-minute show starting November 4, 1978. This meant Yogi's Space Race became shorter, only 60 minutes long. In early 1979, the Space Race part also became its own 30-minute series. You might have seen reruns of the show on channels like USA Cartoon Express, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang.

About the Show

This cartoon was a space version of Wacky Races. It had Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Jabberjaw, and other new characters. They all competed in exciting races through outer space.

Some famous cartoon characters even made guest appearances! These included Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, Quick Draw McGraw, Grape Ape, Godzilla, and Jana of the Jungle.

The show also included the other cartoon segments: Galaxy Goof-Ups, The Buford Files, and The Galloping Ghost. The last two were later combined into their own show called Buford and the Galloping Ghost.

Meet the Characters

Let's get to know the main characters who raced through space or helped solve mysteries!

The Racing Teams

  • Yogi Bear (voiced by Daws Butler) and Scare Bear (voiced by Joe Besser): Yogi Bear is the same lovable bear, but his pal Boo Boo isn't in this race. Instead, Yogi's partner is Scare Bear, a small, furry bear who is scared of almost everything! They race together and are also part of the "Galaxy Goof-Ups" team.
  • Huckleberry Hound (voiced by Daws Butler) and Quack-Up (voiced by Mel Blanc): Quack-Up is a duck who is a very silly and clumsy pilot. Huckleberry Hound usually just relaxes on top of their spaceship. They are also members of the "Galaxy Goof-Ups."
  • Jabberjaw and Buford (both voiced by Frank Welker): Jabberjaw is still looking for respect, just like in his own cartoon. His partner is Buford, the sleepy dog from The Buford Files. Their spaceship has a special track where Buford is supposed to run to make it go faster. But it's hard to keep him awake!
  • Nugget Nose (voiced by Frank Welker), Wendy (voiced by Marilyn Schreffler) and Rita (voiced by Pat Parris): This is the only racing team with three members. Nugget Nose is a ghost miner who loves gold. Wendy and Rita work at the Fuddy Dude Ranch. Nugget Nose's nose looks like a gold nugget, which is how he got his name!
  • Captain Good/Phantom Phink and Clean Kat/Sinister Sludge (both voiced by Frank Welker): Captain Good seems like a perfect hero who always plays fair. But secretly, he's Phantom Phink, a space racer who cheats a lot! He's kind of like Dick Dastardly, but he actually wins some races. Captain Good is a handsome, strong man in white, while Phantom Phink is a skinny, sneaky guy with a big nose and a beard. They can change their looks, and even their car, with a push of a button! No one ever figures out they are the same person.

Clean Kat** is Captain Good's fancy white cat. **Sinister Sludge is Phantom Phink's messy brown dog. They also change forms when their master does.

Other Important Characters

  • The Narrator (voiced by Gary Owens): This is the voice you hear telling you what's happening in the Space Race. He sometimes even talks to the characters!
  • El Fabuloso: This is the Space Race's official computer. It often speaks Spanish and checks the races to catch anyone cheating. It usually disqualifies Phantom Phink for his tricks.
