Godzilla is an American animated TV show about giant monsters. It was made by Hanna-Barbera and first aired in 1978 on NBC in the United States. In Japan, it was shown on TV Tokyo. The series was also known as The Godzilla Power Hour and later as Godzilla: The Original Animated Series when it came out on DVD.

The show often aired with other cartoons. For example, The Godzilla Power Hour included episodes of Godzilla and Jana of the Jungle. Later, it was combined with reruns of Jonny Quest and called The Godzilla Super 90. The show continued to be repackaged with different cartoons until 1981.

About the Show

This animated series follows the exciting adventures of a group of scientists. They travel the world on their special research ship, the Calico. This ship is a hydrofoil, which means it can lift out of the water to go very fast!

Main Characters

The team on the Calico includes:

  • Captain Carl Majors: The leader of the group.
  • Dr. Quinn Darien: A smart scientist.
  • Pete Darien: Dr. Quinn's nephew.
  • Brock Borden: Dr. Quinn's research assistant.

Godzooky: Godzilla's Sidekick

Also on board is Godzooky, who is Godzilla's "cowardly nephew." He's Pete's best friend and often adds funny moments to the show. Godzooky has small wings under his arms and tries to fly, but he's not very good at it. When he tries to breathe fire, he usually just coughs up smoke rings!

How Godzilla Helps

When the team is in danger, especially from other giant monsters, they can call Godzilla for help. They use a special signal device. Godzooky can also roar loudly to summon his uncle.

Godzilla's size in the show can change a lot. Sometimes he's huge, wrapping his claws around a big ship. Other times, the scientists can fit easily on his hand. Instead of his famous atomic breath, this Godzilla breathes simple fire. He can also shoot laser beams from his eyes, like Superman's heat vision.

Who Voiced the Characters?

Many talented actors gave voices to the characters in Godzilla.

  • Jeff David as Captain Carl Majors
  • Brenda Thompson as Dr. Quinn Darien
  • Hilly Hicks as Brock Borden
  • Al Eisenmann as Pete Darien
  • Don Messick as Godzooky
  • Ted Cassidy provided the vocal effects for Godzilla himself.
  • B.J. Ward as Jana of the Jungle (from the combined show)
  • Michael Bell as Dr. Ben Cooper
