Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels is an American animated comedy and mystery TV show. It was created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears. The show was made by Hanna-Barbera Productions for the ABC network. It aired on Saturday mornings from September 10, 1977, to June 21, 1980. You can watch all 40 episodes on the Boomerang app.

Solving Mysteries with Captain Caveman

This series is all about the exciting mystery-solving adventures of three friends called the Teen Angels. Their names are Brenda, Dee Dee, and Taffy. They team up with their amazing friend, Captain Caveman, who they call Cavey for short. Captain Caveman is a very old caveman and superhero. The girls found him frozen in a big block of ice and helped him thaw out.

The idea for the show was a funny take on another popular TV show called Charlie's Angels. It also used ideas from other Hanna-Barbera cartoons like Scooby-Doo and The Flintstones.

Captain Caveman has some cool powers. He is super strong! He can also pull all sorts of useful things out of his long body hair. His special club lets him fly through the air. Different tools can pop out of his club to help him fight crime. His famous shout is "Captain CAAAAAVEMAAAAAAANNNN!" The voice of Captain Caveman was done by Mel Blanc.

Most of the time, the mysteries start when a friend of the Teen Angels asks them for help. The show ran for three seasons and had 40 episodes, each about 11 minutes long.

Meet the Characters

The show features four main characters who solve mysteries together:

  • Captain Caveman (voiced by Mel Blanc) is the main hero. People call him "Cavey." He's known as "the world's first superhero." He is a caveman who is thousands of years old. He can pull many different objects from his long hair. He can also fly, but sometimes his flying power stops working at the worst times! He often says "unga bunga." Cavey sometimes eats big non-food items, like bicycles or TVs. The Teen Angels sometimes have to stop him from eating clues. But he is always loyal to them and helps catch the bad guys.
  • Dee Dee Skyes (voiced by Vernee Watson) is the smartest of the Teen Angels. She is like their unofficial leader. Dee Dee and her friends found Captain Caveman frozen in ice and helped him. She has an afro hairstyle. She usually wears a red sweater, a blue skirt, and red boots. She is good at solving mysteries, like Velma from Scooby-Doo. She is also similar to Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats. Dee Dee is African-American. Her last name is "Skyes."
  • Brenda Chance (voiced by Marilyn Schreffler) is a nervous brunette. She often gets scared by monsters and ghosts. She tries to avoid scary mysteries, much like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. But she often ends up getting caught or in a tricky spot. She wears a purple striped top and pink pants. She helps Dee Dee lead the Teen Angels.
  • Taffy Dare (voiced by Laurel Page) is the blonde member of the group. She often shouts "Zowie!" when she thinks of a plan. Her friends sometimes call her ideas "Daffy Taffy Plans." She has a fun, flirty, and childlike personality. She also has a New York or Southern accent. Even though her plans can be silly, Taffy is very smart and capable. She wears a green dress and matching shoes. She is Dee Dee's second-in-command. Captain Caveman seems to like her, and she likes him too!

Show Intro and Outro

The show's opening had a voice-over by Gary Owens. It said: "Set free by the Teen Angels from his prehistoric block of glacier ice, comes the world's first superhero, Captain Caveman! Now the constant companion to the Teen Angels—Brenda, Dee Dee and Taffy—in their hilarious, and sometimes scary mystery missions. Get ready for Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels!"

The music you hear at the end of the show is the theme from CB Bears.

Captain Caveman's Other Adventures

The Flintstone Comedy Show (1980–82)

In 1980, Captain Caveman got his own parts on The Flintstone Comedy Show. This was a spin-off of The Flintstones. Captain Caveman worked at The Daily Granite newspaper with Wilma Flintstone and Betty Rubble. His "secret identity" was Chester, the office boy. To hide, he just wore glasses and a tie! He needed a coat rack and a fancy way to change into Captain Caveman.

The Flintstone Kids (1986–88)

In 1986, Captain Caveman appeared in a cartoon called Captain Caveman and Son. He was with his son, Cavey Jr. (voiced by Charlie Adler). This was a show that the younger versions of Fred, Barney, Wilma, and Betty watched within their own cartoon, The Flintstone Kids. Captain Caveman's "unga bunga" became a popular phrase for the kids. In this show, the idea of him having a secret identity was not used.

Other Appearances

Hanna-Barbera Movies

Captain Caveman and Dee Dee Skyes were in the animated Scooby-Doo movie Scoob!. In the movie, Captain Caveman was voiced by Tracy Morgan. Dee Dee was voiced by Kiersey Clemons. Dee Dee was the pilot and helper for the Blue Falcon. Captain Caveman lived in a prehistoric area and could speak proper English.

Comic Books

  • Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels appeared in all 13 issues of the Laff-A-Lympics comic books (from Marvel Comics, 1978–79). They were part of the Scooby Doobies team.
  • They also appeared in the first issue of Hanna-Barbera TV Stars (Marvel, 1978).
  • The Captain and the Angels teamed up with Mystery, Inc. in Scooby-Doo #9 (Marvel, 1979).
  • In 2018, Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels were in a story in the DC comic Aquaman/Jabberjaw Special #1. In this story, the wizard Shazam brought Captain Caveman from the past to the present. This was to settle an argument about whether heroes only exist in modern times or if they existed long ago too.
