The College's Big Problem
The story begins at Medfield College. Dean Higgins (Joe Flynn) is in big trouble. The college is losing a lot of money because of Professor Quigley's (William Schallert) science class. They are spending too much! Dean Higgins finds out the high costs are for renting a cow. The students are feeding the cow different mixtures to make it fatter for an experiment.
Dean Higgins gets very angry and fires Professor Quigley. He also threatens to kick the whole class out of college. As the dean leaves, he slams the door. This causes a chemical experiment by Dexter Riley (Kurt Russell) to mix with another student's, Richard Schuyler's (Michael McGreevey), vitamin cereal mix.
Super Cereal Power!
Later, the cow eats some of the cereal that has the new mixture in it. The students are amazed to learn that the cereal makes the cow produce a huge amount of milk. It makes over 80 gallons! The next morning, Dexter eats some of the special cereal himself. He suddenly gains super-strength, and so does the fraternity house's pet dog!
Dexter shows his new super-strength to Dean Higgins and Professor Quigley. He easily picks up a heavy kid in a chair with one hand and Schuyler with the other. Dean Higgins sees this as a great chance to save Medfield College from its money problems. He hopes it will stop the Board of Regents from firing him.
A Cereal Competition
Dean Higgins takes the special cereal to the Crumply Crunch cereal company. He shows the amazing effects to the company's president, Aunt Harriet Crumply (Eve Arden). They decide to advertise the cereal's powers. They challenge Krinkle Krunch, a rival cereal company, to a competition. Krinkle Krunch is run by Mr. Kirwood Krinkle (Phil Silvers).
The challenge is a weight-lifting contest. It will show which cereal gives more strength. Krinkle Krunch sponsors the well-funded State College team. Medfield College will compete against them.
The Formula Is Stolen!
Mr. Krinkle has a secret helper, or "mole," named Harry (Dick Van Patten). Harry tells Mr. Krinkle about the super-strength formula. When Krinkle hears this, he hires a bad guy named A.J. Arno (Cesar Romero) and his friends. Arno and his goons have just been released from prison. Their job is to steal the formula.
They break into the college, but they almost get caught before they can grab the formula. So, they decide to kidnap Schuyler instead. No one knows that Dexter's chemical was the most important part of the formula. They think Schuyler's vitamins are the key. They take Schuyler to Chinatown and try to make him tell them the formula. They use hypnotism to get the information.
A Mix-Up and a Chase
After getting the formula, Arno's group hypnotizes Schuyler. They tell him to go home and not tell anyone what happened. But this accidentally makes him steal a police car! This leads to a car chase, and Schuyler ends up in jail.
Luckily for Medfield, the formula Krinkle Krunch gets does not work. Without Dexter's special chemical, the cereal does not give super-strength. When Mr. Krinkle tries it, he breaks his hand! He yells at Harry, his mole, on the phone. Harry then realizes something important: if they don't know the formula doesn't work, then Medfield College also doesn't know. This means Medfield might lose the weight-lifting competition!
The Big Competition Day
On the day of the competition, Dexter finally realizes that his own chemical was the secret ingredient. He rushes to the lab to get it. He takes the Dean's beautiful but very slow old car. When he gets to the lab, Arno and ten of his goons are waiting for him. Dexter quickly drinks some of his super-strength formula. He easily beats up all the men. He even uses Harry to knock down Arno and his men like bowling pins!
Dexter hears on the radio that he has only four minutes to get back to the contest or Medfield will lose. He pours some of the formula into the car's gas tank. The car speeds off incredibly fast, losing parts as it goes! He makes it back just in time to compete last. But the car is a complete wreck, which makes the dean very upset.
Medfield College is losing badly in the competition. But Dexter uses the last of his super-strength. He lifts the incredibly heavy 1,111-pound weight! This wins the competition for Crumply Crunch and Medfield. Dean Higgins and Professor Quigley get to keep their jobs. Arno goes back to prison, and the sneaky Mr. Krinkle breaks his hand again after eating the wrong cereal!
