James Gregory (born December 23, 1911 – died September 16, 2002) was an American actor. He was known for his deep, rough voice. He often played strong or tough characters. Some of his most famous roles include Senator John Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and Inspector Frank Luger in the TV show Barney Miller (1975–1982).

Acting Career
James Gregory started his acting journey on Broadway in 1939. His first play was called Key Largo.
Serving His Country
During World War II, James Gregory served in the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. This was from 1941 to 1946. He even acted in army training films during this time. He also worked in radio shows.
Famous TV Roles
Gregory played the main character in The Lawless Years. This was a crime drama set in the 1920s. He played a detective named Barney Ruditsky. The show aired on NBC from 1959 to 1961.
After his role as Senator Iselin in The Manchurian Candidate, Gregory appeared in many other films and TV shows. He was in PT 109 (1963) with Cliff Robertson. He also played MacDonald, a spy boss, in the Matt Helm movie series.
Science Fiction and Comedy
Science fiction fans might remember him from Star Trek. He played Dr. Tristan Adams in the episode "Dagger of the Mind" (1966). He also appeared in the Elvis Presley film Clambake (1967).
In 1968, Gregory was the first actor to play Jonathan Kaye in the pilot movie for the TV series Hawaii Five-O. He was also a regular on the popular TV comedy Barney Miller. He played Deputy Inspector Frank Luger in 66 episodes. His last acting role was in an episode of Mr. Belvedere in 1986.
Personal Life
James Gregory was married to Ann Miltner for 58 years. He passed away peacefully on September 16, 2002, in Sedona, Arizona. He was 90 years old.
