A Look Back in Time
Early Settlers and Their Journey
In 1837, the very first people came to live in Scotch Grove. Many of these early settlers traveled a long way from a place called the Red River Settlement. This settlement was in what is now Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
These settlers were supported by a person named Lord Selkirk. They were known as the Selkirk Settlers. They were descendants of Scottish farmers. These farmers had been forced to leave their homes in Scotland during a time called the Highland Clearances. They traveled across the ocean and then south to find new places to live.
How Scotch Grove Grew
The town of Scotch Grove was officially planned in 1872. This was done by James and Charles Applegate. They owned the land where a train station, called a depot, for the Davenport & St. Paul Railroad had just been built that same year.
Scotch Grove became a center for businesses related to farming. This happened during a busy time for Iowa's agriculture, between the 1890s and the 1920s. Even with the railroad, Scotch Grove stayed a small community at a crossroads. In 1902, only 28 people lived there.
The Historic District Today
When the historic district was created, it included 52 important parts. These included 41 buildings that helped tell the story of the area. There were also three structures, like a silo, that were important. The two roads that form the crossroads are also part of the historic area.
Among the historic buildings, there were 19 buildings used for businesses. There were also 15 houses, two buildings connected to the railroad, and five other small buildings like garages and sheds. Some newer buildings in the area are not considered historic.
