Scotospilus is a group of tiny spiders. These spiders are known as dwarf sheet spiders. They were first officially described in 1886. The person who described them was a scientist named Eugène Simon.

Meet the Scotospilus Spiders

Scotospilus is a genus of spiders. A genus is like a family group for animals. All the spiders in this group are very small. They are called "dwarf sheet spiders" because of their size. They also build flat, sheet-like webs close to the ground.

Where Do They Live?

These interesting spiders are found in different parts of the world. Most of them live in Australia and New Zealand. One species has also been found in Vietnam. Another lives in India.

Different Kinds of Scotospilus Spiders

As of May 2019, there are nine known types of Scotospilus spiders. Each one has its own special name. Here are the different species:

  • Scotospilus ampullarius (Hickman, 1948) – Found in Australia (Tasmania)
  • Scotospilus bicolor Simon, 1886 (type) – This is the original type of Scotospilus spider. It lives in Australia (Tasmania).
  • Scotospilus divisus (Forster, 1970) – Found in New Zealand
  • Scotospilus longus Zhang, Li & Pham, 2013 – Found in Vietnam
  • Scotospilus maindroni (Simon, 1906) – Found in India
  • Scotospilus nelsonensis (Forster, 1970) – Found in New Zealand
  • Scotospilus plenus (Forster, 1970) – Found in New Zealand
  • Scotospilus wellingtoni (Hickman, 1948) – Found in Australia (Tasmania)
  • Scotospilus westlandicus (Forster, 1970) – Found in New Zealand
