Early Life of Scott La Rock
Scott Sterling was born on March 2, 1962, in the Bronx, New York City. His parents separated when he was four years old. His mother, Carolyn Morant, raised him. She worked for the city. They moved from Queens, New York City, to different parts of the Bronx.
Scott was very good at school and sports. He graduated from Our Saviour Lutheran High School in 1980. He then went to Castleton State College in Vermont. There, he played basketball for the college team.
Scott La Rock's Music Career
After college, Scott La Rock came back to New York City. He wanted to find a job and get into the music world. Through a friend of his mother, Scott got a job as a social worker. He worked at the Franklin Armory Men's Shelter in the Bronx. At night, he worked as a DJ at a popular hip hop spot called the Broadway Repertoire Theatre.
While working as a social worker, La Rock met a rapper named KRS-One in 1986. KRS-One was staying at the Franklin Men's Shelter. Scott and KRS-One decided to form a group called Boogie Down Productions (BDP). They also brought in DJ Derrick "D-Nice" Jones. D-Nice was a cousin of the shelter's security guard.
In 1987, the group released their first album, Criminal Minded. Many people still think this album is a classic in hip-hop music.
Tragic Passing of Scott La Rock
On August 27, 1987, D-Nice had a problem with some people. D-Nice asked La Rock to help calm things down. Later that day, La Rock, Scotty "Manager Moe" Morris, DJ McBooo, D-Nice, and BDP bodyguard Darrell were leaving in a Jeep CJ-7. They were near the Highbridge Homes Projects building in the South Bronx.
As they were driving away, shots were fired at their car. La Rock hit his head on the dashboard. He did not realize at first that a bullet had hit him in the back of his head. He was quickly driven to Lincoln Hospital. He was awake when he arrived at the emergency room. He told doctors he felt cold and tired. Sadly, he passed away while doctors were trying to help him.
Two men were arrested in connection with the event. However, they were later found not guilty in court.
