Scott Waites (born on February 17, 1977) is a professional darts player from England. He is famous for winning the BDO World Darts Championship twice, in 2013 and 2016. Scott has also won other big tournaments like the Winmau World Masters and the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts. He is the only player from the BDO (British Darts Organisation) to ever win the Grand Slam of Darts.

Scott's Darts Journey

Scott Waites started his professional darts career in 2004. His first big win came in February 2007 at the Dutch Open. This was a huge event with almost 3,000 players! He also won the Welsh Masters title that year.

Early Major Tournaments

In August 2007, Scott was invited to play in the first-ever Grand Slam of Darts. This tournament brings together players from both the BDO and PDC (Professional Darts Corporation). He didn't make it past the first stage, but it was a great experience.

Scott made his debut at the 2008 BDO World Darts Championship. He reached the quarter-finals, which is like making it to the final eight players. Later that year, he won the BDO Gold Cup by beating another top player, Gary Anderson.

In December 2008, Scott played in his first major BDO final at the Winmau World Masters. He lost a very close match to Martin Adams. Even so, he finished the year as the number one ranked player in the WDF (World Darts Federation) because he played so well all season.

Becoming a Top Player

Scott became the number one player in the BDO world rankings. At the 2009 BDO World Darts Championship, he again reached the quarter-finals.

In 2009, Scott had a fantastic run at the Grand Slam of Darts. He made it all the way to the final! He played against the world number one, Phil Taylor, and finished as the runner-up. This earned him a lot of prize money and was a huge success.

Scott uses the song "Chelsea Dagger" by The Fratellis as his entrance music. It's a fun way to get ready for his matches!

Winning Big Titles

At the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts, Scott had an amazing tournament. He won all his group matches and then beat some of the best players. In the final, he played against James Wade and won! This was Scott's first major championship win in either the PDC or BDO. It also made him the first BDO player to win the Grand Slam.

In 2011, Scott won his first World Masters title. He beat the defending champion, Martin Adams, in the semi-finals and then Dean Winstanley in the final. He continued his winning streak by also taking home the BDO British Open and the WDF World Cup singles title.

Scott then won his third major championship at the Zuiderduin Masters. He had a very close final match against Darryl Fitton and won 5-4.

World Champion Status

Scott went into the 2013 BDO World Darts Championship as one of the favorites. He played incredibly well throughout the tournament. He reached the semi-finals for the first time and then beat Richie George to get to the final. In the final, he faced Tony O'Shea and won the title with a score of 7-1!

The next year, 2014, was a bit tougher for Scott. He lost in the first round of the 2014 BDO World Darts Championship as the defending champion. He mentioned that he had some injuries and a power cut right before his match, but he still gave credit to his opponent.

In 2015, Scott had an operation on his shoulder, which kept him from playing for a couple of months. But he came back strong and won the British Classic!

Scott entered the 2016 BDO World Darts Championship as the 9th seed. He played brilliantly and won his second World Championship title by beating Jeff Smith 7-1 in the final.

Moving to the PDC

After many successful years in the BDO, Scott decided to try and join the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). This is another major darts organization. He tried to earn a "Tour Card" in 2019 but didn't succeed.

However, in 2020, he tried again and this time he was successful! He won a play-off match and earned a two-year PDC Tour Card. This meant he could now play full-time in the PDC.

PDC Career Highlights

Scott made his debut at the 2021 PDC World Darts Championship. He won his first match but then lost a very close game in the second round.

In 2022 and 2023, Scott reached the quarter-finals in some of the Players Championship events. These are smaller tournaments that help players earn ranking points. After two years, he finished outside the top 64 players, which meant he lost his Tour Card.

Even without a Tour Card, Scott continues to compete in PDC events like the Challenge Tour, trying to earn his way back to the main tour.

Life Outside Darts

Scott Waites was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. He lives in Huddersfield, also in West Yorkshire.

For many years, Scott was not a full-time darts player. He worked as a carpenter! But after he earned his PDC Tour Card in 2020, he quit his job to become a full-time professional darts player.

Scott is a big fan of Liverpool F.C, a famous football club.
