Scott Waites (born 17 February 1977) is an English professional darts player. He is known for his success in darts, especially for winning major tournaments. Scott has won the BDO World Darts Championship twice, in 2013 and 2016. He also won the Winmau World Masters and the Zuiderduin Masters. A big moment in his career was winning the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts. He was the only player from the BDO (British Darts Organisation) to win this event. Since 2020, he has been playing in the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC).

Scott's Darts Journey

Scott Waites started his journey in darts with a big win in February 2007. He won the Dutch Open, a large tournament with many players. Soon after, he also won the Welsh Masters title.

Early Major Tournaments

In 2007, Scott was invited to play in the first-ever Grand Slam of Darts. This was a special event where players from both the BDO and PDC competed. He played against top players but did not make it past the group stage.

Scott made his first appearance at the 2008 BDO World Darts Championship. He reached the quarter-finals, showing his skill on the big stage. In 2008, he also won the BDO Gold Cup. Later that year, he reached his first major BDO final at the Winmau World Masters. He finished the year as the number one ranked player in the WDF (World Darts Federation).

Becoming a Top Player

Scott continued to be a top player in the BDO. He reached the quarter-finals of the 2009 BDO World Darts Championship. In 2009, he also made it to the final of the Grand Slam of Darts. This was a big achievement, and he earned a lot of money from it. For his entrance, he sometimes used the song "Chelsea Dagger".

At the 2010 BDO World Darts Championship, Scott again reached the quarter-finals. He then went on to win the 2010 Grand Slam of Darts. This was a huge victory, as he beat top players like Raymond van Barneveld and James Wade. This win made him the first BDO player to win the Grand Slam.

World Champion Success

In 2011, Scott won his first World Masters title. He beat the defending champion, Martin Adams, in the semi-finals. He also won the BDO British Open and the WDF World Cup singles title. He then won his third major championship at the Zuiderduin Masters.

Scott entered the 2013 BDO World Darts Championship as a favorite. He played very well throughout the tournament. He reached the semi-finals for the first time. Then, he won the final against Tony O'Shea with a score of 7-1, becoming the BDO World Darts Champion!

After his big win, Scott had a quieter season in 2013-2014. He still had a good run at the PDC Grand Slam, reaching the semi-finals. However, he lost in the first round of the 2014 BDO World Darts Championship as the defending champion.

In 2015, Scott had an operation on his shoulder. He returned to darts in March and won the British Classic. He also reached four other finals that year. In 2016, Scott won his second World Championship title. He beat Jeff Smith 7-1 in the final of the 2016 BDO World Darts Championship.

Moving to the PDC

After many years in the BDO, Scott decided to try and join the PDC. In 2020, he successfully earned a two-year PDC Tour Card. This meant he could play in the bigger PDC events. He became a full-time professional darts player.

Scott made his PDC World Championship debut in 2021. He won his first match but then lost a close game in the second round. In 2022 and 2023, he reached the quarter-finals in some Players Championship events. However, he finished outside the top 64 players, so he lost his PDC Tour Card. Since then, he has been competing in the PDC Challenge Tour events.

Personal Life

Scott Waites was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. He now lives in Huddersfield, also in West Yorkshire. Before becoming a full-time darts player, he worked as a carpenter. He is a big fan of Liverpool F.C.
