Designing the Scottish Rite Temple

Building the Scottish Rite Temple was an interesting project. At first, a different architect was chosen.

Early Plans and Changes

In 1909, Santa Fe's newspaper, The Daily New Mexican, announced exciting news. A local architect named Isaac Rapp was chosen to design the new Scottish Rite Cathedral. Rapp had offices in both New Mexico and Colorado.

A few months later, the newspaper showed Rapp's design. It looked like a grand, old-fashioned building. But just a week after that, the same paper said Rapp's plans were "not satisfactory."

A New Architectural Style

Soon after, a new team was hired: Hunt and Burns from Los Angeles. They decided to build the temple in a Moorish Revival style. This style looks a lot like buildings from ancient Spain.

The design was inspired by a gatehouse at the Alhambra in Spain. The Alhambra is a famous palace built by Moors. The architects, Sumner P. Hunt and Silas Reese Burns, were known for their Spanish-style buildings in California. They wanted to connect New Mexico's Spanish history with the Moorish style.

A Unique Pink Building

One surprising thing about the Scottish Rite Temple is its color. The building was, and still is, covered in pink stucco. This makes it stand out even today!

What Happened to the First Architect?

Even though Isaac Rapp didn't get to design the Scottish Rite Temple, he was still very successful. He built a similar design in 1913. This building became the Las Animas County Court House in Trinidad, Colorado. So, not getting this one job wasn't a big problem for him.

History and Importance

The Scottish Rite Temple has an interesting history. It was used as a clubhouse for many years.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its unique design and history, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it's an important landmark that should be protected.
