Scrabble is a small, unincorporated community located in Berkeley County, West Virginia, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

Throughout its history, this community has also been known by names like Hard Scrabble and Hardscrabble.

About Scrabble's Name

People believe the community got its interesting name because of the challenging or "hard to scrabble" terrain in the area. Imagine a place where it was tough to move around or build!

What's in the Historic District?

The historic district covers about 62 acres (which is about 25 hectares). It features a mix of buildings from the late 1800s and early 1900s, along with farmland.

Some of the most important buildings you can find there are the Mount Wesley Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1920, and the Scrabble School, built in 1882. You'll also see many houses built in the I-house style and other smaller, local house styles. The George Washington Hollida House, which is also a historic landmark, is part of this district.

The district is mainly located along Scrabble Road and Dam No. 4 Road in Berkeley County. It also extends onto Silver Spring Road in Jefferson County. The county line between Berkeley and Jefferson counties is marked by a stream called Rocky Marsh Run, which flows right through the community.
