What Inspired the Sculptured House?
The architect, Charles Deaton, had a special idea for the house. He said he found a high spot on Genesee Mountain. From there, he could feel how big the Earth was. He wanted the house's shape to feel free and open, like a song without limits. This vision led to its very unusual and artistic design.
How Was the Sculptured House Built?
The Sculptured House was built in 1963. A company called Delzell Inc. started the construction. Charles Deaton ran out of money before the house was finished. Because of this, he never actually lived in the house he designed.
Completing the House's Interior
For nearly 30 years, the inside of the Sculptured House was mostly empty. Charles Deaton passed away in 1996. Then, in 1999, a businessman named John Huggins bought the house. He decided to finish it. Huggins added a large new section to the house. This part was also designed by Deaton, with help from Nick Antonopoulos. Deaton's daughter, Charlee, designed the inside of the house. The entire project was finished in 2003.
The house is very big, covering 7,700 sq ft (720 m2) (about 715 square meters). It has five different levels. Inside, there are five bedrooms and five bathrooms. It also has a modern kitchen and a main bedroom suite at the very top.
Changes in Ownership
In 2006, another businessman, Michael Dunahay, bought the house from John Huggins. Later, in 2010, the house was sold again. It was purchased for $1.5 million at an auction.
