Seacliff State Beach is a popular park located on Monterey Bay in Aptos, California. It's about 5 miles (8 km) south of Santa Cruz, California. This beach is most famous for a unique concrete ship called the SS Palo Alto, which rests in the ocean near the shore. Just north of Seacliff State Beach, you'll find New Brighton State Beach.

A Look Back: History of Seacliff

The land where Seacliff State Beach now sits was originally home to the Ohlone people. Later, Spanish missionaries built Mission Santa Cruz about eight miles away.

Land Grants and Early Trade

In 1821, Mexico became independent from Spain. The land was then divided into large areas called land grants. The beach area became part of the Rancho Aptos grant in 1833. This grant was given to Rafael Castro. He worked with a man named Claus Spreckels to build the Castro-Spreckels wharf. This wharf helped the beach become a busy shipping port. The area also had a strong logging industry, using the local coast redwood trees.

The port was important for trade with the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. In 1838, King Kamehameha III of Hawaiʻi asked for help. He wanted Mexican vaqueros from California to teach Hawaiians how to manage wild cattle. Seacliff became a popular place to find these skilled vaqueros. Hawaiians called them paniolos.

From Resort to State Park

In the 1850s, Thomas Fallon bought part of the beach. He turned it into a resort and named it "New Brighton." He chose this name to honor his favorite seaside resort in England.

In the 1920s, after Claus Spreckels passed away, parts of the beach were developed. They became Seacliff Park and the Rio Del Mar Country Club.

In 1930, California made its first state grant to protect this land. Then, in 1931, it officially became a state beach.

The most famous part of Seacliff Beach is the SS Palo Alto. This ship is special because it was built from concrete during World War I. It was never finished or used in the war.

In 1930, the Cal-Nevada Company brought the unfinished ship to Seacliff Beach. They placed it at the end of a wooden pier. The company turned the ship into a fun amusement center. It had a ballroom, a cafe, a heated swimming pool, and carnival games. However, the company went out of business after only two seasons. The ship was then stripped of its attractions.

Today, the SS Palo Alto is permanently closed to visitors. It has been damaged by storms over the years. In 2016-2017, a part of the ship overturned, and the pier was also damaged. During the big storms of 2022–2023, the ship broke down even more. The pier was badly damaged, and the part closest to the ship was destroyed. The pier was completely removed starting in March 2023.

Amazing Animals and Plants

Seacliff State Beach is home to many different kinds of birds and sea creatures. You can find mussels, ocean worms, and sea stars. There are also sea anemones, barnacles, and rock crabs.

In the water, you might spot harbor seals, sea lions, and dolphins. If you're lucky, you might even see sea otters and whales! The SS Palo Alto ship acts like a special home for many of these marine animals. Fish like flounder, mackerel, halibut, and perch also live here.

Fun Things to Do

Seacliff State Beach is a great place for outdoor activities. It has areas for RV camping, picnic tables for meals, and fire pits for bonfires. It's also a very popular spot for surfing and fishing.
