Seagraves is a city in Gaines County, Texas, United States. In 2020, its population was 2,153 people. It is a friendly community located in the western part of Texas.

History of Seagraves

The area where Seagraves now stands was once known as Blythe, Texas. It had a post office at the home of S.J. Blythe.

How Seagraves Got Its Name

In 1917, the Santa Fe Railroad came to the area. The railroad already had a town named Blythe in California. So, they needed a new name for this Texas location. They chose to honor Charles L. Seagraves. He was a traveling agent for the railroad and was well-liked by the local people.

Early Buildings and Growth

The first building built in the new town was the Spearman Land Company. Soon after, the Higginbotham Bartlett Lumber Company opened. Seagraves quickly grew into a busy town.

The 1928 Fire and Rebuilding

In 1928, a big fire burned down a large part of the business area. The only building left on the west side of Main Street was the Seagraves Motor Company. After the fire, new, modern brick buildings were built. Many of these buildings are still standing today.
