History of Sealy
How Sealy Started
The nearby town of San Felipe sold some of its land to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad in 1879. This land was used to create the city of Sealy. The city was named after George Sealy, a powerful businessman who owned a lot of stock in the railroad company.
The Sealy Mattress Company
In 1881, a man named Daniel Haynes, who built machines for cleaning cotton (called cotton gins), received a special request. Someone asked him to make a mattress filled with cotton. This simple request led to the start of a big company, the Sealy Mattress Company, named after the town. The company grew very quickly and came up with new ideas. They even got patents for inventions, like a machine that could press cotton.
