Sean Burrage is an American lawyer and politician. He became the Chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education in December 2024. Before that, he served in the Oklahoma Senate from 2006 to 2014.
Sean Burrage is a citizen of the Choctaw Nation. His father, Michael Burrage, was a federal judge and a well-known lawyer for the Choctaw people.
In 2006, Sean Burrage was elected to the Oklahoma Senate. He served there until 2014. In May 2014, he became the president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma. He worked there until 2019, when he moved to a job at the University of Oklahoma. In October 2024, it was announced that Burrage would become the new chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education.

Early Life and Education
Sean Burrage grew up in Antlers, Oklahoma. He was part of a Choctaw family. His father, Michael Burrage, was the main lawyer for the Choctaw Nation.
Sean Burrage went to the University of Oklahoma. He earned a degree in business in 1990. He then studied law at the University of Oklahoma College of Law, finishing in 1993.
Starting His Career
After finishing law school, Burrage worked for the University of Oklahoma. He helped manage the university's relationships with state and federal governments until 1996.
Later, he joined a law firm called Taylor, Burrage, Foster, Mallett, Downs, & Ramsey. This firm was based in Claremore, Oklahoma. In 2001, he was recognized for his free legal help to children in the court system.

Sean Burrage has held important roles in both government and education. He has worked to improve laws and help students.
Serving in the Oklahoma Senate
In 2006, Sean Burrage was elected to represent District 2 in the Oklahoma Senate. This district included Rogers and Mayes County.
During his time as a state senator, Burrage helped create more than 50 new laws. He was part of several important committees. In 2007, he was named "Best Newcomer Legislator of the Year" by a higher education group. He was reelected in 2010. From 2012 to 2014, he was the Senate Minority Floor Leader, which meant he led the smaller political group in the Senate. He decided not to run for reelection in 2014.
Leading in Higher Education
In May 2014, Sean Burrage became the 20th president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Under his leadership, the university improved its operations. It also saw a big increase in the number of students.
Burrage was also involved in other important groups. He was the Vice Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Council of Presidents in Oklahoma. In 2015, Governor Mary Fallin appointed him to her Education Advisory Committee. He also served on the State Regents’ Task Force on the Future of Higher Education in 2017.
In September 2019, Burrage announced he would leave his role as president of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He took a new job as the Vice President for Executive Affairs at the University of Oklahoma.
On October 9, 2024, Sean Burrage was named the 10th chancellor of the Oklahoma State System for Higher Education. This system includes 25 colleges and universities across Oklahoma. He officially started his new role on December 2, 2024.
