Steve Burrage, born on July 7, 1952, is a politician from Oklahoma. He has held important roles in the state government. He served as the Chairman of the Oklahoma Tax Commission. He was also the Oklahoma State Auditor and Inspector.
Governor Brad Henry appointed Burrage as the State Auditor and Inspector on July 10, 2008. He took over after Jeff McMahan resigned. Burrage served until 2010, when he was not re-elected. Gary Jones, a Republican, won the election.
About Steve Burrage's Early Life
Steve Burrage was born in Durant, Oklahoma. He is a member of the Choctaw Nation. His brother, Michael Burrage, was a U.S. District Court judge. His nephew, Sean Burrage, was an Oklahoma state senator.
In 1975, Steve Burrage earned a degree in accounting from the University of Oklahoma. After college, he became a certified public accountant (CPA) in Oklahoma. He worked as a partner in a CPA firm from 1977 to 1982.
In 1982, he joined FirstBank in Antlers, Oklahoma. He became the president and CEO of the bank. From 1984, he also served as the chairman of the board. He continued in these roles until 2008.
Steve Burrage's Political Career
After becoming the State Auditor and Inspector, Burrage said he would run for a full term. He wanted to see if he was successful in his role first. In the 2010 election, he ran but was defeated by Gary Jones.
While he was State Auditor, his office looked into the Wagoner, Oklahoma school district. They found that $270,000 was missing from the school's child nutrition program. This happened between 2005 and 2009.
After leaving his role as State Auditor in 2011, Burrage returned to FirstBank. He became the chairman of the board again. He also served on the board of the Oklahoma Policy Institute. In 2012, Governor Mary Fallin appointed him to the Oklahoma Board of Corrections.
In January 2015, Governor Mary Fallin asked Burrage to join the Oklahoma Tax Commission. He replaced Jerry Johnson, who was retiring. In July 2015, Governor Fallin also named Burrage as the Chairman of the Commission. He resigned from this position in April 2016.
