Sean Andrew Marks (born August 23, 1975) is a basketball executive from New Zealand and the United States. He used to be a player and coach. Today, he is the general manager for the Brooklyn Nets, a team in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Sean Marks was the very first player born in New Zealand to play in the NBA. He won two championships with the San Antonio Spurs: one as a player in 2005 and another as an assistant coach in 2014.

Sean Marks' Basketball Journey

Early Life and College Years

Sean Marks went to Rangitoto College in Auckland, New Zealand. In 1992, he moved to the United States. He attended the University of California, Berkeley. There, he studied political science and earned his degree in 1998.

Playing in the NBA

In the 1998 NBA draft, Sean Marks was picked 44th overall by the New York Knicks. On the same night, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. He later played for several other NBA teams. These included the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs.

In the 2000–01 season, Marks played for a team in Poland called Śląsk Wrocław. He also had a short tryout with the Seattle SuperSonics. In the 2003–04 season, while with the Spurs, he was unable to play due to a knee injury.

The next season, in 2005, Marks was part of the San Antonio Spurs team that won the NBA championship. They beat the Detroit Pistons in a tough seven-game series. Even though he didn't play in the playoffs that year, he was a valuable member of the championship team.

On July 27, 2006, Marks signed with the Phoenix Suns. In April 2008, he had a great game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. This is called a double-double.

After his time with the Suns, Marks joined the New Orleans Hornets in August 2008. He later played for the Portland Trail Blazers. In 2011, he was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats, but they waived him shortly after.

Playing for New Zealand

Sean Marks also played basketball for his home country, New Zealand. He represented New Zealand in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. He was also part of the team that finished fourth at the 2002 FIBA World Championship. This was a great achievement for New Zealand basketball.

Coaching and Management Career

Transition to Coaching

Sean Marks stopped playing basketball in 2011. In 2012, he started working for the San Antonio Spurs in their basketball operations department. He also became the general manager for the Austin Toros, a team linked to the Spurs. In 2013, he became an assistant coach for the Spurs.

As an assistant coach, Marks helped the Spurs win another NBA championship in 2014. They defeated the Miami Heat in five games. This was Marks' second championship, but his first as a coach. After this, he moved into a front office role. He became the assistant general manager for the Spurs.

Leading the Brooklyn Nets

On February 18, 2016, Sean Marks was announced as the new general manager for the Brooklyn Nets. He signed a four-year contract. Marks told the team's owner that rebuilding the Nets would take several years. He wanted to build a strong team for the future, not just try to win quickly.

Under Marks' leadership, the Nets began to improve. In the third year of his contract, the Nets made it to the 2019 NBA Playoffs. This was their first playoff appearance since 2015.

In May 2017, Sean Marks was honored for his contributions to basketball. He was inducted into the Basketball New Zealand Hall of Fame.

In April 2019, Marks was suspended for one playoff game and fined $25,000. This happened because he entered the referees' locker room after a game.

Personal Life

Sean Marks is married to Jennifer, and they have four sons. The family lives in Greenwich, Connecticut. Marks became an American citizen in 2007.
