Sean Marks' Basketball Journey
Starting in New Zealand and College Years
Sean Marks grew up in Auckland, New Zealand, and went to Rangitoto College. In 1992, he moved to the United States to play basketball for the University of California, Berkeley. He studied political science and earned his degree in 1998.
Becoming an NBA Player
After college, Sean was chosen by the New York Knicks in the 1998 NBA draft. He was the 44th player picked overall. On the same night he was drafted, he was traded to the Toronto Raptors. He later played for other teams like the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs.
In the 2000–01 season, Sean played for a team in Poland called Śląsk Wrocław. He also had a short tryout with the Seattle SuperSonics but didn't play any games for them.
Winning a Championship with the Spurs
During the 2003–04 season, Sean couldn't play because of a knee injury called patella tendonitis. But the next season, in 2005, he helped the San Antonio Spurs win the NBA championship! Even though he didn't play in the final playoff games, he was part of the team that beat the Detroit Pistons.
Sean later signed with the Phoenix Suns in 2006. In one game in 2008, he had a great performance, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. This is called a double-double. He then played for the New Orleans Hornets.
In 2010, he joined the Portland Trail Blazers. Sean was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats in 2011, but they released him soon after.
Playing for New Zealand
Sean also proudly played for the New Zealand national team. He competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. He was also part of the team that finished fourth at the 2002 FIBA World Championship. This was a big achievement for New Zealand basketball!
Life After Playing: Coaching and Management
Becoming a Coach and Winning Again
Sean Marks stopped playing basketball in 2011. In 2012, he started working for the San Antonio Spurs in their basketball operations department. He also became the general manager for their minor league team, the Austin Toros.
In 2013, he became an assistant coach for the main Spurs team. The Spurs went on to win the 2014 NBA Finals, beating the Miami Heat. This was Sean's second championship, but his first as a coach! After that, he moved back to a management role as an assistant general manager.
Leading the Brooklyn Nets
On February 18, 2016, Sean Marks was announced as the new general manager for the Brooklyn Nets. He signed a four-year contract. Sean told the team's owner that rebuilding the team would take several years. He wanted to build a strong team for the future, not just try to win quickly.
His plan worked! In his third year, the Nets made it to the 2019 NBA Playoffs. This was their first time in the playoffs since 2015. In May 2017, Sean was honored by being added to the Basketball New Zealand Hall of Fame.
In April 2019, Sean was suspended for one game and fined $25,000. This happened because he went into the referees' locker room after a game.
