Séan Joseph McClory (born March 8, 1924 – died December 10, 2003) was a famous actor from Ireland. He had a long career that lasted for over 50 years! During this time, he acted in more than 100 movies and TV shows. Sometimes, people knew him as Shawn McGlory or Sean McGlory.

Sean McClory's Early Life

Séan Joseph McClory was born in Dublin, Ireland, on March 8, 1924. He spent his younger years in County Galway. His father, Hugh Patrick McClory, was an architect and engineer. His mother, Mary Margaret, was a model.

Sean studied at St. Ignatius Jesuit College. He also went to the National University of Ireland Medical School. During World War II, he served in the Irish Army Medical Corps.

After the war, Sean became very interested in acting. When he wasn't acting, he took on many different jobs. He washed dishes, drove trucks, and even worked in a gold mine. He also sailed around the world! At one point, he even sold his blood to get money for food.

Sean McClory had a very busy acting career. He performed on stage, in movies, and on television.

Stage Acting

Sean started his acting journey on stage. He was especially good at comedy plays at the Abbey Theatre in Ireland.

He also acted on Broadway, which is a famous theater area in New York City. He played a character named Rory Commons in a play called The King of Friday's Men in 1951. Sean also performed in other plays across the United States. These included Dial "M" for Murder and Shadow of a Gunman.

Film Acting

Sean McClory was discovered by a talent scout from RKO Pictures while acting at the Abbey Theatre. He moved to Hollywood in 1947. There, he began his long career in movies.

He played an Irish policeman in early films like Dick Tracy Meets Gruesome. Sean was also part of a group of actors who often worked with director John Ford. He appeared in Ford's movies such as The Quiet Man and Cheyenne Autumn. He played a ringmaster in Ring of Fear (1954) and a chauffeur in the comedy My Chauffeur (1986).

Television Roles

Sean McClory also had many roles on television. He played Captain Clary in the adventure series Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers. He was also Pat McShane in the crime drama Kate McShane. Sean played Myles in Bring 'Em Back Alive. He was Jack McGivern in the western show The Californians.

In 1958, he appeared in an episode of Richard Diamond, Private Detective. Sean was also a guest star in western shows like Overland Trail and Pony Express. He appeared in The Man from Blackhawk and The Islanders in 1960.

Sean also made two appearances on the western show The Rifleman. He played an Irish character who was a rival to the main character, Lucas McCain. He also appeared in Lost in Space as a Scottish "ghost" named Hamish. Sean was a guest star on Perry Mason several times. He also appeared in two episodes of Bonanza. In 1967, he played Scott Winters in an episode of Mannix.

Sean McClory's Personal Life

Sean McClory was married four times. His third marriage was to Sue Alexander, who passed away in 1979. In 1983, he married actress Peggy Webber. Sean McClory died on December 10, 2003, at his home in Hollywood Hills, California. He was 79 years old and passed away from a heart condition.
