Sean's Early Football Days
In 1984, Sean Millington was a student at Carson Graham Secondary School. He decided to try out for football when the rugby season changed. His coach noticed how big he was and suggested he play as an offensive lineman. The next year, Sean convinced his coach to let him try playing as a running back.
After high school, Sean went to Simon Fraser University. He played football for the Simon Fraser Clan team there. After college, he tried out for the New York Giants, a team in the NFL. During these tryouts, he got great advice from coach Bill Parcells. Parcells told him he was talented but needed more experience. He advised Sean to get that experience in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Playing Professional Football
Sean Millington played as a fullback in the CFL for 12 years. He played for the Edmonton Eskimos, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the British Columbia Lions. A fullback is a player who helps block for the running back and can also run with the ball.
Sean had some amazing games. While playing for the Edmonton Eskimos in 1999, he ran for 225 yards in one game! This was a record for a Canadian fullback at the time.
Most of Sean's success was with the BC Lions. He played with them for most of his 12 years. Fans called him "the Diesel" because of his powerful playing style. With the Lions, Sean won the Grey Cup twice. The Grey Cup is like the championship trophy for Canadian football. He was even named the Grey Cup's Most Valuable Canadian in the 2000 Grey Cup game. That same year, he ran for over 1,000 yards, which is a big achievement for a Canadian player.
Sean also won many awards with the Lions. He was named a CFL All-Star three times. He also won the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian Award twice. This award goes to the best Canadian player in the league.
First Retirement and Broadcasting
After his first retirement from football in 2002, Sean joined the CFL on CBC in 2003. He was part of the broadcast team that talked about games before and during halftime. He was known for being honest and direct in his comments.
However, after the 2004 Grey Cup, Sean decided to play football again!
Returning to the Field
After two years away from the game, Sean Millington returned to play for the Toronto Argonauts in 2005. The Argonauts needed his strong running and blocking skills. Sean's power running style was a great addition to their team.
Sadly, his return was cut short. In October 2005, Sean suffered a serious injury to his right Achilles heel (a tendon in the back of the ankle). This injury ended his football career for good, just weeks before the playoffs.
Life After Football
After his second retirement, Sean Millington went back to broadcasting for the CFL. He also started writing a weekly column for the CFL's website.
Even while playing football, Sean had started acting. After his final retirement, he took on more roles. He appeared in movies like Are We There Yet? with Ice Cube. He was also in Underworld: Evolution and the TV series Blade: The Series.
Sean also used his economics degree to work in the financial industry. He worked for wealth management companies and as an investment advisor. Today, Sean Millington works as a personal trainer in Vancouver. He created "The Millington Method," which helps people build healthy habits.
On January 7, 2010, Sean Millington was honored. He was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. This is a special award for great athletes from British Columbia.
