Coal Mining in Seatonville
Seatonville was once a busy coal mining town. It was one of many such towns near Spring Valley and LaSalle, Illinois. The first coal mine shaft was dug in 1880 by brothers Isom and James Seaton.
In 1888, the mine was sold to the Chicago, Wilmington, and Vermilion Coal Company. During a big strike in 1889, this mine was the only one still working in northern Illinois. The company brought in a small group of African-American workers to replace miners who had left.
The mine faced problems and went bankrupt in 1900. The Spring Valley Coal Company then bought it. The village of Seatonville grew a lot until the mine finally closed in 1913.
