About Sebastián Sichel
Early Life and Family
Sebastián Sichel was born in Santiago, Chile. His parents are Antonio Alejandro José Sichel Poblete and Ana María Ramírez Alvarado. When he was born, his last name was registered as Sichel. Later, his mother married Saúl Iglesias, and Sebastián's paternal last name was changed to Iglesias.
When Sebastián was 11 years old, he found out from his grandfather that Saúl Iglesias was not his biological father. He met his biological father for the first time when he was 30. After that, he changed his paternal last name back to Sichel. He kept Iglesias as his middle name because he cared for Saúl Iglesias.
Education and Career
Sebastián Sichel went to school at María Goretti Lyceum and Alexander Fleming Lyceum. He then studied law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (PUC). He also earned a master's degree in public law from the same university.
From 2016 to 2018, Sichel Ramírez taught constitutional law at the San Sebastián University. In 2008, he married journalist Bárbara Encina. They have three children together.
Political Journey
Starting in Politics
In 2013, Sebastián Sichel ran to become a deputy for areas like Las Condes. He was supported by a group called Public Force. This group later became the Citizens party.
In 2015, he left the Christian Democratic Party. He had worked for Claudio Orrego's presidential campaign in 2013, but then decided to go in a different direction. In 2016, he was almost a presidential candidate for the Citizens party.
Public Service Roles
From 2013 to 2018, Sichel led the Plural Chile Study Center. This center was involved in public discussions about laws. He also directed a business network called Giro País.
In 2016, Plural Chile suggested changing a law that limited how many foreign employees a company could hire. Sichel believed that Chile needed immigration to help its economy grow. He said that some politicians were not serious about the issue.
On November 19, 2017, he publicly supported Sebastián Piñera for president.
On May 2, 2018, during President Piñera's second term, Sichel became the executive vice president of Corfo. This was an important role where he managed contracts for lithium, a valuable mineral.
On June 13, 2019, he became the Minister of Social Development and Family. He held this position until June 4, 2020.
Presidential Campaign
After some changes within the Citizens party, Sichel left and helped start a new political group called Libres ("Free") in March 2019.
In June 2020, President Piñera appointed him as the president of BancoEstado, a state-owned bank. He served in this role until December 2020.
After leaving the bank, Sichel announced he wanted to run for president. He ran as an independent candidate in the primary election for the centre-right group Chile Podemos Más. On July 18, 2021, he won this primary election. He received 49% of the votes, beating other candidates, including Joaquín Lavín. Many business leaders supported his campaign.
In the presidential election on November 21, 2021, Sichel finished fourth among seven candidates. He received about 12.79% of the votes and did not move on to the second round. He then supported José Antonio Kast in the second round of the election.
