The Sechelt Indian Band, also known as the shishalh first nation, is a group of Indigenous people who govern themselves in Canada. They live in the southern Sunshine Coast area of British Columbia, Canada. The Sechelt were one of the first Indigenous groups to sign important agreements about their land with the government of British Columbia. Today, their traditional lands are part of the Sechelt Indian Government District. This district works like a town or city government and includes 33 special land areas.
Working Towards Agreements
The Sechelt Indian Band is very far along in a special process called the BC Treaty Process. This process helps Indigenous groups and the governments of Canada and British Columbia make agreements about land, rights, and self-government. The Sechelt Indian Band talks directly with the governments of Canada and British Columbia.
They worked with a person named Murray Rankin, who represented British Columbia. The Sechelt Indian Band was the first group to reach an "Agreement in Principle" through the British Columbia Treaty Commission. This agreement is a big step towards a final treaty.
