The Second Magdalena massacre was a surprise attack by Apache warriors. It happened in November 1776 at the Spanish mission village of Magdalena de Kino. This village is in what is now northern Mexico.

The attack was so complete that most or all people living there were killed. Because of this, the exact date of the attack is not known. It is called the "Second Magdalena massacre" because a similar event happened there before.

What Happened at Magdalena?

This attack was not the first time Magdalena de Kino faced danger. In November 1757, a different group of native people, the Seri, attacked the town. They killed thirty-one people during that earlier event.

The Discovery of the Attack

In 1776, a Spanish military leader named Francisco Ignacio de Trespalacios was on a mission. He was a Captain in the Spanish Army. He had taken over after another commander, Francisco Tovar, was killed in a battle.

Captain Trespalacios was leading eighty-three cavalry soldiers. They were traveling from a fort called Presidio Santa Cruz de Terrenate. As they explored the area, they came across Magdalena de Kino.

The Aftermath of the Attack

When the Spanish soldiers arrived, they found a terrible scene. The Apache warriors had attacked the settlement. They had taken many valuable items from the town.

The attackers had also killed the people living there. To make things worse, they had set fire to the local church. The soldiers estimated that about forty Apache warriors were involved in this attack.
