Second baseman facts for kids
Second base, also known as 2B, is one of the four important spots on a baseball field. A player running around the bases must touch second base after first base to get closer to scoring a point (called a run) for their team. The player whose job it is to defend second base is called the second baseman.
Second basemen are often very quick and have fast hands. They need to be able to throw the ball quickly after catching it. This is especially important when they are trying to complete a "double play." A double play is when the defense gets two players out on the same play. Second basemen and shortstops are usually right-handed. This makes it easier for them to quickly throw the ball to first base or home plate during a double play. In baseball's system for tracking defensive plays, the second baseman is given the number 4.
