Sedamsville is one of the many neighborhoods in Cincinnati, Ohio. It sits right along the Ohio River in the western part of the city. This area was first settled in 1795 and later became part of Cincinnati in 1870. In 2020, about 1,256 people called Sedamsville home.

History of Sedamsville

Sedamsville has a long and interesting past! It was founded in 1795 by a man named Colonel Cornelius Sedam. He was a soldier who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Colonel Sedam moved to the area to help build Fort Washington.

Early Growth and Industry

Sedamsville was also home to one of the first factories for Fleischmann's Yeast in the United States. This factory was started by Louis Fleischmann, his brother Maximilian, and James Gaff. In 1835, Sedamsville became its own small village. Later, in 1870, the big city of Cincinnati officially included Sedamsville as one of its neighborhoods.

The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to Sedamsville. This was a time when many new factories and businesses started up. More people moved to the area to work in these factories.

Challenges and Recovery

Sadly, Sedamsville faced tough times. During the Great Depression, many businesses closed down. Then, in 1937, a huge flood from the Ohio River caused a lot of damage. Many people found it hard to rebuild after this disaster.

More buildings were lost in the 1940s when River Road was made wider. This project almost completely wiped out the main business area. In recent years, some buildings in the neighborhood were not well cared for.

But there's good news! With help from the Cincinnati Preservation Association, many historic buildings have been saved. Almost the entire neighborhood is now listed on the National Register of Historical Places. This means its important history is protected.
