Genus:
Sedum
Species:
villosum

The Sedum villosum, also known as the hairy stonecrop or purple stonecrop, is a type of flowering plant. It can live for two years (biennial) or many years (perennial).

Its leaves are usually covered with tiny hairs, which is why it's called "hairy stonecrop." These leaves are small, about 3 to 8 millimeters long, and can sometimes look a bit reddish. Even though most have hairs, some varieties, like S. villosum var. glabratum, might have smooth leaves without hairs.

The flowers of the hairy stonecrop are pretty. Each flower has five pink petals, and each petal can be up to 5 millimeters long.

Where It Lives

The hairy stonecrop is found in cool, northern parts of the world. It grows naturally in places like Greenland and Iceland. You can also find it across northern and central Europe, reaching as far east as Lithuania and Poland.

Interestingly, it has also been spotted on some islands in southeastern Canada. In Britain, it grows as far south as the middle of Yorkshire.

A Plant That Likes Damp Places

Most plants in the Sedum family, often called stonecrops, are known for liking dry, sunny places. They are good at storing water in their thick leaves. However, the hairy stonecrop is a bit different! It prefers damp or wet habitats, which is quite unusual for a Sedum plant. This makes it special among its relatives.
