Seisyll ap Clydog facts for kids
Seisyll ap Clydog was a king in Wales a long time ago, around the late 600s or early 700s. He ruled a place called Ceredigion. Later, a bigger kingdom named Seisyllwg was created. This new kingdom included Ceredigion and another area called Ystrad Tywi. Many people believe Seisyll was the king who made his kingdom grow so much that it was named after him. However, we don't have many old records about his life or his time as king.

Who Was Seisyll ap Clydog?
Family and Early Records
We learn about Seisyll from old family trees called the Harleian genealogies. These records show that he was the son of Clydog (also known as Clitauc Artgloys). Seisyll was the sixth king in his family line after Ceredig, who is thought to be the first ruler of Ceredigion.
The Harleian records also say that Seisyll was the father of Arthgen. Arthgen was likely the King of Ceredigion who died in the year 807, according to another old Welsh record called the Annales Cambriae.
What Does His Name Mean?
The name Seisyll probably comes from an old Latin word, *Saxillus. This word is related to the Welsh word sais, which means a person from Saxon lands or England.

How Seisyllwg Got Its Name
Most historians believe that the kingdom of Seisyllwg was named after King Seisyll ap Clydog. Important historians like John Edward Lloyd and Egerton Phillimore thought that Seisyll was the king who created this larger kingdom.
When Was Seisyllwg Formed?
Even though the kingdom was named Seisyllwg, older writings from that time still called the area Ceredigion. This was true even when Seisyll and the kings who came after him ruled. This makes some people think that the name "Seisyllwg" might have become popular much later. It might have been used to describe the kingdom after it had grown and changed over time.
