Selman City is a small community in Rusk County, Texas, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. In 2000, about 271 people lived there. It's also part of the larger Longview, Texas metropolitan area.
A Look at Selman City's Past
Selman City became important in the 1930s. This was when S.A. Selman found oil on his land. This discovery made the community grow around the oil industry.
In 1939, Raymond A. Crawford became the first postmaster. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office. The Selman City post office also served nearby towns like Turnertown and Joinerville.
The community grew quite a bit. Its highest population was 450 people in 1947-1948. At that time, it had seven businesses. By 1980, the population had gone down to 271 people. It stayed at that number through 2000, with two new businesses. Even though Selman City is unincorporated, it still has its own post office with the ZIP code 75689.
