Senedo people facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Senedo were a Native American tribe. They lived in what is now northern Virginia, along the north fork of the Shenandoah River.

The Senedo might have been part of the Iroquoian group of tribes. Most Iroquoian tribes lived further north, around the Great Lakes. Other Iroquoian-speaking tribes in Virginia included the Nottoway and Meherrin. The Cherokee people, a much larger group, also spoke an Iroquoian language. They lived further south and west.

The Senedo and Their Neighbors

The Senedo shared their land with other tribes. They sometimes faced conflicts with powerful groups like the Catawba. The Catawba were a Siouan-speaking people from the Carolina Piedmont. They had a different culture than the Senedo.

Conflict and Competition

The Senedo and Catawba were traditional enemies. They often competed for resources like animal furs and hunting grounds. This competition sometimes led to battles between the tribes.

What Happened to the Senedo?

Between 1650 and 1700, a terrible event happened to the Senedo. Early English records tell us that the powerful Catawba tribe attacked the Senedo. This attack was a massacre, meaning many Senedo people were killed.

Only a few Senedo survived this attack. These survivors later met with English colonists and shared their story. After this event, the Senedo tribe was no longer known to exist as a distinct group.

The Senedo's Legacy

Even though the Senedo tribe disappeared, their name lives on. In 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, a new county was formed in Virginia. This county was named Shenandoah County. It was named after the former native people of the area, the Senedo. Before this, the county had been named after the Royal Governor Lord Dunmore.
