Senkata is an important area located in the southern part of El Alto, Bolivia. It is part of El Alto's 8th District. El Alto is a very large city, being the second most populated in Bolivia according to a 2012 count.

Senkata has gained international attention because of big social protests that happened there. These events include parts of the Bolivian gas conflict in 2003 and the protests after the 2019 elections. In both situations, the government allowed police and military to get involved, which sadly led to people getting hurt or dying.

In 2003, a special rule called Decree 27209 supported this action. In 2019, another rule, Decree 4078, was used. This rule protected the Armed Forces of Bolivia from being blamed for any harm caused. However, Decree 4078 was later removed on November 28, 2019, after the government of Jeanine Áñez made an agreement with community groups.

Where is Senkata Located?

Senkata is found along Avenida 6 de marzo in the city of El Alto, Bolivia. This avenue is part of a major road called Ruta nacional 1. This national highway connects the La Paz Department (Bolivia) with other areas of Bolivia. These include the departments of Oruro, Chuquisaca, Potosí, and Tarija.

What Makes Senkata Special?

The Senkata area is near the main highway that goes from La Paz to Oruro. It is home to the Senkata Plant, which is a very important place. Here, a company called Yacimientos Petrolíferos de Bolivia stores and distributes liquid gas and gasoline. These fuels are then sent to the nearby city of La Paz, which is also where the main government offices of Bolivia are located.

A Look at Senkata's History

Like many other parts of El Alto, Senkata's population grew because people moved there from other regions of Bolivia. Many of these new residents were miners. They had to leave their jobs in the 1980s when many mines closed down. This caused them to move to cities like El Alto to find new opportunities.

This period of people moving to El Alto was a big moment in the city's growth. About 90% of the people living in El Alto speak the Aymara language.
