Serafin R. Cuevas (born June 25, 1928 – died February 9, 2014) was a Filipino lawyer. He served as a judge and later became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He was appointed to this high position by President Ferdinand Marcos.
Early Life and School
Serafin R. Cuevas was born on June 25, 1928. His hometown was Bacoor, Cavite, in the Philippines.
He went to Las Piñas Elementary School for his early education. For high school, he studied at the University of Manila. He then earned his law degree from the University of the Philippines in 1952. He also passed the Bar examination in the same year. This meant he could officially practice law.
His Career as a Lawyer and Judge
Mr. Cuevas began his career teaching law. He was a professor at the College of Law at the University of the Philippines. He also taught at the Institute of Law at Far Eastern University.
Later, he became an Assistant Fiscal for the City of Manila. A fiscal is like a prosecutor, a lawyer who works for the government. After that, he became a Judge in the Court of First Instance.
Before joining the Supreme Court, he was an Associate Justice in the Intermediate Appellate Court. On May 31, 1984, he was appointed as an Associate Justice to the Supreme Court of the Philippines. This is the highest court in the country.
His Passing
Justice Cuevas passed away on February 9, 2014. He was 85 years old. He died from liver cancer.
