Serafín Martínez del Rincón y Trives (born in Palencia in 1840, died in Madrid on March 24, 1892) was a Spanish painter. He was famous for his paintings that showed everyday life (called genre art), historical events, and pictures of people (portraits).

Early Life and Art Training
Serafín started learning art in his hometown at the Escuela Municipal de Dibujo de PalenciaMadrid, the capital city. There, he continued his art studies at a very important school called the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando.

First Big Exhibitions
- In 1862, he took part in a big national art show called the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He showed a painting about "The Cid's oath in Santa Gadea". The Cid was a famous Spanish hero.
- Two years later, in 1864, he showed a painting from the Bible. It was called "Raising of Jairus' daughter". He hoped to win a special scholarship to study art in Rome, Italy. However, he did not win this time.
Later Successes
Serafín did not have another big art show until 1878. In that year, he won a third-class medal for his painting "An Exorcism". This painting was then sent to a huge international exhibition in Paris, France, called the Exposition Universelle.
Teaching Art
Serafín also had a career as an art teacher.
Professor in Cádiz and Málaga
- In 1866, he became a Professor at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Cádiz.
- Later, he moved to Málaga and became a Professor of drawing and decoration. He taught at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Telmo .
- In 1883, he returned to Cádiz. There, he took on a new role teaching about color and how to arrange things in a painting.
Director in Madrid
By 1888, Serafín had become the Director of the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Madrid

In 1888, a government minister named José Canalejas suggested Serafín for a very special award. It was called the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. Serafín received this important award in July of that year.
Towards the end of his life, Serafín painted fewer historical scenes. He focused more on everyday life scenes and portraits. One famous portrait he painted was of King Alfonso XII riding a horse. This painting was for the Academia de Caballería de Valladolid .
Final Years
Serafín faced a sad time in July 1891 when his only daughter passed away. He himself died the following March, in 1892.
