A Look Back at Sergeantsville's History
How Sergeantsville Got Its Name
The area where Sergeantsville now stands was first settled around 1700 by a person named Mr. Thatcher. The community was later named after Charles Sergeant. He was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Three brothers from the Sergeant family were also shopkeepers in the area. If you visit, remember to say "serge" (like the fabric) and not "sarge" when you say the name!
From "Skunktown" to Sergeantsville
Sergeantsville was officially created in 1827. Before this, the area was known by a different name: "Skunktown." This unusual name might have come from the town being a place where people traded skunk furs. When it became important to have a post office, the name was changed to Sergeantsville.
The Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge
Just west of Sergeantsville, you can find the Green Sergeant's Covered Bridge. It was built in 1872 over the Wickecheoke Creek. This bridge is very special because it is the oldest remaining covered bridge in all of New Jersey. It's a cool piece of history you can still see today!

Thanksgiving in the Country House Tour
Since 1973, Sergeantsville has hosted an annual event called "Thanksgiving in the Country." Each year, people can tour four or five different homes. These homes are chosen because they have interesting history, unique architecture, or cultural importance. It's a great way to see the historic buildings in the area.
People from Sergeantsville
Many interesting people have lived in or are connected to Sergeantsville. Here are a few:
- William Cotton (1880–1958) was a famous portrait painter. He also drew funny pictures (caricatures) and wrote plays.
