Sergey Valentinovich Pogorelov (born June 2, 1974, died April 24, 2019) was a famous Russian handball player. He was known for his powerful right arm as a "right back" player. Sergey achieved great success with the Russian national team. He won an Olympic gold medal in 2000 and an Olympic bronze medal in 2004. He also helped Russia win World and European Championships.

Sergey Pogorelov's Handball Journey
Sergey Valentinovich Pogorelov was born in Volgograd, Russia, on June 2, 1974. He became a professional handball player. Handball is a team sport where two teams try to throw a ball into the other team's goal. Players use their hands to pass and throw the ball. Sergey played the "right back" position. This means he was usually on the right side of the attack. He was known for his strong shots. Sergey sadly passed away in his hometown of Volgograd on April 24, 2019.
Playing for Clubs
Sergey Pogorelov played for many different handball clubs during his career. He started his journey in Russia. He played for HC Kaustik Volgograd until 1999. After that, he moved to Germany. He joined TBV Lemgo in 1999 and then ThSV Eisenach in 2000.
Moving to Spain
In 2001, Sergey moved to Spain. He played for BM Ciudad Real, one of the top clubs. During his time there, he also played for other teams on loan. He played for Villeurbanne in France in 2002. Then he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2003. In 2004, he played for BM Altea. From 2005 to 2008, he played for Algeciras BM. His last club was RK Metalurg Skopje in 2008.
