Sergi Arola (b. March 4, 1968) has earned a reputation as being a culinary trend-setter, fusing Catalonian and Mediterranean cuisines. His teachers include: Ferran Adrià (working at Talaia Mar restaurant and as the meat section’s chef de partie at el Bulli), Juan Mari Arzak, Pierre Gagnaire and Roger Vergé. In 1989 he began work at Barcelona’s L'Aram which led to him discovering his creative culinary side.

Recognition

Arola was discovered by the Salaverris, who invited him to work in their restaurant and the first elBulli laboratory. This ultimately led to his taking charge of La Broche – a restaurant that required significant renovation which received two Michelin stars in 2011. In 2015 he became part of a fusion of jazz and Spanish tapas with the opening of Abu Dhabi’s ‘Pearls and Caviar by Sergi Arola’ in 2015. Other places Arola has played a key culinary role in include: the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Las Ventanas in Mexico, Iberia’s Business Class menus and V Club feat Arola where he was Gastronomic director.

Awards

Arola has received various awards including:

  • 1999: Chef l’Avenir Award from the Académie Internationale de la Gastronomie (International Academy of Gastronomy)
  • 2001: Chef of the Year from Gourmetour Guide
  • 2002: National Gastronomy Award from the Real Academia Española de Gastronomía (Royal Spanish Academy of Gastronomy)
  • 2009: Appointed the face of Berberena.

Arola has appeared in the following TV shows: MasterChef and El Discípulo de Chef.
